The Ladies Free Ranging Good Time

If you like pictures of chickens, then you are in for a treat!
Lot 'o chick pics!

This is what I usually see when I go to visit the girls - 2 chunky white girls (cwg) free ranging.
Really, really free ranging.
Chicks on the prairie!
Then the next thing I see - Zela! (pronounced SAY-la)
She always comes running when she sees me.
She follows me around until I sit down and then she jumps into my lap for a cuddle.
She'll stay in my lap until I leave, if I get up she waits until I sit down again and then she jumps back up to get a hug.

Zela is such a photo hog!
Can she help it if she is so beautiful?!?

There's busy (bossy) Butter!

More of the flock - Zela, some CWGs, Lavender (on the right), Butter (way in the back), Zoe, Hawky and some red girls too.

It's funny, but I can pick out Zela, Butter and Lavender's voices from the rest of the flock, even in the dark.

Really Zela? Every picture?

Hello!
I love the CWGs face whiskers.

Hey! One of these things is not like the other...........

Lavender!

A CWG and Butter.

Gossip 'round the watercooler.

This Lady is a real snuggler, but I can't remember her name!
She's sweet, but jealous. When I'm holding Zela and not petting her, she will pull feathers out of Zela's tail until I pay attention to her!

Butter says, "See 'ya again soon and bring raisins next time."

Chicken Adventures and Eggs!

More pictures of the Ladies from yesterday.

Butter checks on the nest box action.
Who's in there?

"Could I have a little privacy?"

Butter to Zela: "Do you have any eggs under there?"

Zela: "Buzz off! I'm busy."

"One, two, three, four..."

Isn't she pretty?

Nest boxes are a good place for a nap.

Lavender.
And
Remember the Purple Girl?
Her feathers have grown in.

Zeeba takes a stroll.

Hop.

Jump!

Lavender: "It's true. I layed them all."

Lots of beautiful eggs!

The terracotta one in the center is Zela's egg.
I watched her lay it.

Chicken Coats

I get to chicken sit again!
Yay!
I spent a couple hours with the girls today.
And made them coats.....
I think this picture below sums up the Ladies opinion of coats.

A few of the girls were being picked on by their sisters.

Now they sport stylish pink fuzzy coats to cover their bare backs.

Warm and toasty!

I cut the holes too big on the first couple.

They are very easy to make.
No sewing!

This one is the right size.

It fits tighter across her back.

Look at little Hawky!

Pretty girl!

DC's Challenge - Thai Tofu Satay

The January 2010 DC challenge was hosted by Cuppy of Cuppylicious and she chose a delicious Thai-inspired recipe for Pork Satay from the book 1000 Recipes by Martha Day.
~

Obviously, I wasn't going to make this with piggy.
So, I used tofu.
(On a side note - this Jan. 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of my vegetarianism)
~
I love Thai food - love, love and I've eaten a lot of it. On the west coast, on the east coast....in my house in the middle of nowhere.
I did not enjoy this recipe and the Ladies ate it.
(Anyone seeing a pattern with my Daring Baking/Cooking stuff being eaten by the Ladies???)
~
I like tofu, but I have specific ways of preparing it.
Not coating it in onion and garlic. Uncooked onion and garlic!
I drank pots of mint tea to get the taste out of my mouth!

I pressed the tofu.

Then added the "flavoring" mixture.

And let in marinate overnight.

Then I baked it in the oven.

The tofu was still white inside! Yuck.
And it didn't have any flavor, besides onion/garlic.
~
In my opinion: The mix needed much more liquid. Tofu is like a sponge and it will soak up whatever flavor you put it in. Much, much less onion and garlic. And cook the onion - caramelize it, before putting it with the tofu. Add more soy sauce, some rice vinegar, rice wine, a little chile pepper, ginger, ground pepper, maybe some smoked salt.
And cook it in a dish with the sauce, don't bother with the skewers.
